Communal aerials


The advice on this website assumes that you own any aerial that you use. Communal (shared) aerials, typical in blocks of flats, are normally maintained by the system's owner. This is often the landlord or agent, though it could be a residents' management committee. Although you can check the connecting leads within your home, please do not call anyone out yourself to check for aerial problems before speaking to the landlord or owner. It may well be the owner's responsibility to call in an aerial installer at their expense - not yours. If they are unwilling, check with neighbours - more complaints will strengthen your case.

If you are having a problem, you can provide helpful information to the owner of the system if you discover something relevant. For example, if disruption occurs when the lifts are being used, there could be a problem with suppression of the lift motor. Also, if there is thermostat-type interference, and your building has a centralised central heating boiler, this could be the cause and should be checked. Giving the owner such information may help bring a speedier solution, and avoid further delay while an official investigation is undertaken.

If an official investigation is needed, time can often be saved if it's possible to speak to an engineer called in by the system's owner. Their measuring equipment may help in deciding if the problem is generated within the system, or coming from outside.
